EYES: Golden brown, shot through with gold and black streaks (which look somewhat unnatural and are intended to, as they develop over time)
FEATURES: Multiple piercings: tongue, lower lip, to the left side, a nose piercing, an industrial in her upper right ear, three piercings in the upper cartilage on her left ear, helix piercing in her left ear, three piercings on each lower lobe. Most of her jewelry is fairly utilitarian, nothing noteworthy. Wears a few long necklaces, some bracelets, and a few rings. she has tattoos, but they're all hidden beneath her clothes. If she ends up without a jacket/in a tank top, three tattoos are obvious: a chrysanthemum tattoo on her right arm; a pattern of black stars on her chest, between her collarbones and breasts, that form an unknown constellation; and a compass rose tattoo (with the coordinates: N 37' 47.049" W 122' 30.563") on her left forearm.
ATTIRE: Always wears black because it's easy, often found in a leather jacket and jeans or a hoodie and sweatpants, with combat boots. If she has to dress up to fit into a world where that would stand out, she leans more toward masculine clothing, and will venture into jewel tones for color. She always wears sunglasses, and if she's in a world where she can't get away with sunglasses, wears whatever glasses she can, or resorts to veils and blindfolds to avoid people seeing her eyes.
INVENTORY: Always has sunglasses, a backup pair of sunglasses and often a third pair of backup sunglasses, a notebook and pen, her wallet, a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, chapstick, a burner phone, some cash, black leather gloves, a compass, and an old wallet (not hers) with an ID card of her former partner (along with some expired credit cards, a library card, and a couple of pictures).
WEAPONS: Usually has a knife on her somewhere. Often multiple knives. Doesn't use weapons other than that, unless it's makeshift things she grabs during a fight.
BACKGROUND
HOME: Grew up in the city.
FAMILY: Mother, father, divorced, not often contacted. Some distant relatives, but otherwise no family to speak of.
OCCUPATION: Realm walker/hopper, smuggler, rebel
IN-DEPTH: Only child of two busy, working-class people who had little tolerance for Makari's oddities and were grateful when she was accepted into what they assumed was a high school for gifted students. Instead, it ended up being an organization to shape the people gifted with what they referred to as "the sight," aka the gift to see between the veil between worlds. Due to the nature of the school, it was essentially a boarding school, and she had little contact with her family after that. (read more)
BLURB: At first glance, she looks like some sort of rebellious punk girl, which is an image she carefully crafts and maintains. It tends to keep people at a distance.

IN-DEPTH: Makari puts on a front like nothing else: cool and detached, with a sarcastic sense of humor, able to play up people if she needs to. But deep down, she's often melancholic and lonely. If she's around someone she can lower her guard with, she'll be quieter, more thoughtful, and serious, less given to sarcastic teasing. She has two goals: find her former partner (or confirm their death) and topple the organization that trained her. (read more)

AU TYPES: I can easily AU Makari into various worlds and am happy to do so. I can also wrangle ideas without making them an AU, considering her background/world. Modern AUs and sci-fi tend to be my favorite, but I am here for anything.
CONTENT TYPE: Makari's world is fairly dark, and I prefer things that are consistent with that, although I'm not adverse to writing fluff or lighter things, they're just not my first choice.

HISTORY

childhood/a (somewhat) normal life
she was a weirdo because she kept seeing imaginary people until she met someone who informed that no, those were real people. her parents were both busy, working-class people trying to keep a roof over their heads, and Makari was rather odd, often lost in her own world. she learned to keep quiet and keep to herself rather quickly and grew watchful of the people around her. because of her ability to see through the veil between worlds, she was often distracted, which got her in trouble, which in turn became a thing she quickly guarded against. she can focus incredibly well when she needs to, tuning out the worlds around her.

teens/the agency
once people learn you have magic powers, they tend to do whatever they can to control you, you know? so she spends a lot of time learning to see into other cities and travel between them, when necessary, for various reasons (most of which are shitty, but she doesn't realize it until later). (this is also a work in progress, but think any organization that uses kids to do their dirty work under the guise of protecting the world and training kids.
things go. events happen. makari goes through a lot of missions because she is incredibly talented at world hopping, fighting, adapting as necessary, and works well with others, especially her primary partner. and then she loses her partner and freaks out.

the unhinged years
fuck the police, basically. she wants her partner back, and she also wants to take down the agency she's working for, so she's got her hands full. she'll literally do anything for the first thing, and slightly less for the second, so she takes on odd jobs all the time, provided they get her money or information.

PERSONALITY
Makari likes to think she's an unaffected, easy-going person. And sometimes she is. She can be easy-going and friendly, charming when she needs to be, but a lot of that is a forced personality, developed as she grew up in the hands of an organization that wanted to use her. At heart, she's deeply affected, sometimes very angry, and in a lot of pain.
She's hardened her heart over the years, filled with disillusionment.
ABILITIES

world hopping/realm walking

Essentially, the city where Makari was born and raised (think a less bougie San Francisco), is in a spot where dimensions overlap, and some people can see between the various dimensions. As far as Makari knows (and the organization she works for), this is the only place where it happens. Each city is built on the same foundation - 44 square miles, attached to the mainland by a thin strip of land, the rest of it jutting out into a bay. (note: I will handwave this to make her appear in other random worlds because that's fun.)

Makari is one the rare people who can travel from anywhere in the city. It just takes some concentration, and she can take one person with her when she does it. If she wants, she can travel to a specific city, as long as she's been there before. If she doesn't have a specific destination in mind, she can go to any city— one she's been to before or a completely new one. Once she has traveled to a place, she will pick that up and it will become a familiar place, one she can access.

There are places where traveling between them works much easier; think of it like walking through a door into a new place. These spots enable most travelers to go to a specific city, should they wish, although there are slight odds it won't work.

Makari can travel away from the cities when she world hops, but it's harder, especially if it's a place that has a different culture and language from the one she's familiar with.

the void
Makari is one of a small handful of individuals who see into the void when traveling, and has gotten stuck there on occasion. It is full of chthonic nightmare-like monsters, utterly devastating to people, and has left people injured on occasion, even when they don't get stuck there. Most people, even other travelers, can't see into this void and just know that traveling is dangerous.

eyes & other marks
The more people travel between cities, the more it shows up on them, either in marking their eyes or leaving small scars somewhere on their bodies. Makari's curse is the eyes— her brown eyes are marked with yellow and black streaks that aren't too obvious unless someone is close, and then are noticeable)
