Makari was born and raised in The City - which is based on modern San Francisco, though with less of the NIMBY/tech vibes; it's a vibrant melting pot of cultures, dedicated to progress, with a thriving economy thanks to its ports. The City is a 45 square mile city at the end of a peninsula, connected to the mainland only by a thin strip of land and some bridges, and is mostly self-contained and self-sustaining.

There are other cities that sit on top of this city, taking up the same space, although very few people know about the other cities. Think of them as existing in different dimensions, and this city just happens to be at the meeting point for all of them. More details below.

There are three dozen documented cities.
